Throughout the session, she consistently checked in to make sure the pressure was right and adjusted it whenever needed, which made a huge difference for me. What Trauma-Informed Massage Means in My Practice

Being a trauma‑informed massage therapist shapes both how I work and where I work. My practice in Colorado Springs is located inside a psychotherapy office that specializes in trauma. Clients may be referred by the therapists on staff or find me directly. This setting is intentional — massage can be a powerful complement to talk therapy, helping to regulate the nervous system during deep and often challenging emotional work.

Touch can surface somatic patterns — chronic tension, guarding, or areas that feel disconnected — which may or may not be trauma‑related. I do not require details about what a client is addressing in therapy, though sharing is always welcome. Emotional release during a session can take many forms; I do not prompt it, but I am prepared to hold space when it happens.

I believe all massage should be trauma‑informed, though that is often not the case in practice. Clients seeking this approach may need specific accommodations in pressure, positioning, draping, pacing, or sequencing — similar to considerations used in oncology massage — and I tailor each session to your needs.

My trauma‑informed approach is built on three core principles:

  • Safety
I work with you to create a space where you feel physically and emotionally secure, communicating clearly and taking steps to avoid re‑traumatization.

  • Collaboration
Healing happens in relationship. I invite you to actively participate in shaping your session; shared decision‑making is part of the process.

  • Empowerment
You are a client, not a patient. A patient is someone a practitioner works on. A client is someone a practitioner works for. Every session is individualized to your preferences because your experience is yours alone.

Collaboration

My work exists within a broader community of healing. I collaborate with Paul Stubbs, LCSW, a licensed clinical social worker and former Marine infantry officer whose therapy practice centers on trauma and addiction. Paul is the creator of Boxing and Mindfulness Therapy (BAM-T) — an innovative somatic approach that combines non-contact boxing with mindfulness, breathwork, and present-moment awareness. Together, BAM-T and trauma-informed massage offer clients a powerful, body-centered path toward healing that works on multiple levels at once.

Trauma lives in your body. That feeling that came from the fight-or-flight response with no way to get yourself safe (freeze) that has you unable to complete the response to the threat. Once you calm and soothe your wounded parts through emotional release with Paul, extinguish the remnants with me. With an integrated experience, once you recognize the trauma and release it, complete the reset through custom bodywork so you can reclaim the person you were before the trauma.
